DESCRIPTION:It’s about wildlife and fun things to do in the outdoors at Chief Logan Lodge\, the weekend activities are designed for youth from 6-16 but open to any age including parents and adults. Meet a Natural Resources Police Officer\, a wildlife manager\, and a naturalist. Participants will learn about box turtles\, play Nature Jeopardy\, roast hot dogs\, make s’mores and learn how to pitch a tent. \nAttend one or all of the activities. To attend the cookout\, attendees must attend one or all of the Saturday morning programs. Indoor Wildlife Camp at Chief Logan is free; however\, preregistration is necessary by emailing Lauren.E.Cole@wv.gov. \nHere is a brief outline of the weekend activities: \nFriday\, March 6\, 2020\n5:00 p.m. – Winter Meet and Greet. Get a schedule and name tag.\n6:00 p.m. – It’s OK! I’m a Naturalist.* Learn about Lauren Cole’s job at Chief Logan State Park and about what Chief Logan State Park offers.\n7:00 p.m – Turtle Talk!* Who doesn’t like turtles? Learn about native species in West Virginia and how we all can help them.\n7:30 p.m. – Camp snack \nSaturday\, March 7\, 2020\n9:30 a.m. – Getting started for the day.\n10:00 a.m. – Track Teasers!* Learn how to identify common animal tracks. Compare your hands and feet to wild animals and more fun.\n11:00 a.m. – It’s OK! I’m traditionally known as a game warden.* Learn about my job as a Natural Resources Police Officer. Bird checklist of Birds of Logan distributed.\n10:00 a.m. – Wrap up\, thank you. \nYouth 6-16 that participate fully in a minimum of three activities marked with an * will qualify for a YPP (Young People for Parks) certificate. \nAll programs during the Wildlife Camp are free and open to the public to attend\, however\, the activities focus on 6-16 year old interest. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adults. It is recommended children between 12-16 be accompanied by an adult. Some programs and activities may cover topics such as hunting\, firearm safety\, safety around wildlife\, wildlife-related illness and others. The goal is to introduce youth to WV natural resources and individuals in natural resource careers. Preregistration is necessary for camp planning. Folks do not have to attend all activities. Hikes begin at 10:00 a.m. Plan to arrive early (by 9:00 a.m.) for a wildflower identification presentation to learn about wildflowers and buds you may observe on the trails at Chief Logan State Park. \nParticipants have the option of taking a traditional hike along the park’s 3-mile long Woodpecker Trail\, or a leisurely walk along the Fitness and Shawnee Trails\, which are approximately 2 miles total. Both the guided walk and hike begin at 10:00 a.m. and depart from the park office/museum. Those participating in the hike/walk will receive a pass for a special guided tour of the wildlife exhibit with Naturalist Lauren Cole. \nRefreshments and a bite to eat will be provided by The Women’s Club of Omar. \nFree to attend and open to the public\, these are good programs for folks in garden clubs\, hiking groups\, master naturalist\, or generally curious folks.
